A Q&A with my Favorite Traveling Dad

About 10 years ago, in the very first weeks of our freshman year in college, I met the man who would change my whole life. Through those four years we became very good friends (#friendzoned). After graduating we went our separate ways, only to reconnect later on and kindle a love we knew was there all along. We share a passion for traveling, the great outdoors, 13-year-old's humor, pizza, and the Florida Gators, and together we are raising one heck of a little guy.

Watching him be a dad amazes me every single day, so when this camera-shy introvert agreed to let me interview him for the blog, I was so happy!

TTUP: What is your favorite thing about being a dad?
R: Do I have to pick one thing? Everything about this little guy. Watching him being born was really cool. But my favorite thing is coming home from work and seeing him flash me a big smile.

TTUP: And your least favorite?
R: Changing his diaper at 3am... because I like to sleep. (And he does it anyway. I tell ya, he's a good one).

TTUP: What is it like to travel with me?
R: It's different. (Then, apparently I gave him a look). Not in a bad way, haha! I was accustomed to traveling by myself, in my own terms, so there's always an adjustment period. It's actually cool because you do your work, you research and have fun ideas. I get to see things I wouldn't normally see, or go to neighborhoods or restaurants I wouldn't normally go to.

What he means is I drag him to farmers markets, arts and crafts fairs, and vegan restaurants.

TTUP: What is it like to travel with a baby?
R: It's fun. And challenging. You have to get started on your day much earlier, because as the day goes on, everything tends to snowball. It's fun to go through the airport and see people 'oooh-ing and aaaah-ing' at him, or seeing how he does on airplanes. That's probably the best part - being nervous about how he's going to do, and then he surprises us and does really well.

TTUP: What is your favorite place you've visited?
R: I can't say I have a favorite, but since moving out west, I have gained an appreciation for wide open spaces and national parks. Yellowstone is beautiful. I loved Zion, and the Grand Canyon. They're all special.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

TTUP: What's next on your bucket list?
R: Antelope Canyon, in northern Arizona.

TTUP: What is one piece of advice you have for new traveling parents?
R: As far as catching a flight or other timed activities, give yourself plenty of time. Leave early. For everything else, don't be so caught up with keeping a tight schedule. You will need to make adjustments for the baby, so just go with it.

TTUP: What is one piece of advice for our son as he gets older?
R: Go and see everything you can. Experience as much as you can, and have fun while you do it!

Happy Father's Day weekend to all dads, dads-to-be, grandpas (hi dad and father-in-law!), great-grandpas and fur-dads alike. You are all heroes in my eyes.
